Packshot - Edouard Delaunay Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Poulettes

Edouard Delaunay, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Poulettes, Rouge, 2022

Presentation

One of the main characteristics of Nuits-Saint-Georges’ wines lies in the great diversity of its terroirs, diversity that is found in the different styles of wines that vary greatly depending on where the grapes are grown. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the House of Edouard Delaunay illustrates this multiplicity by offering several selections from Premier Cru climats located both north and south of the village.

Terroir

This Premier Cru is located to the south of the town of Nuits-Saint- Georges, near former hard limestone quarries. The soil is shallow, very well drained and rich in calcareous debris. Nearby limestone cliffs serve as protection for the plot and promote ripening. The grapes reach their peak of maturity rather early and are extremely concentrated.

Winemaking

The grapes were handpicked and carefully sorted a first time in the vineyard and a second time at the winery before being almost completely destemmed: 4 cases of the healthiest grapes were pressed as whole bunches. Vinification took place in oak vats and cuvaison lasted around 15 days, punctuated by two daily punch-downs by feet during the most intense stage of the fermentation process. The wine was then transferred into barrels (50% new oak) sourced from the forests of Central France, where it was allowed to age for 16 months.

Tasting

Magnificent deep red color, with nearly black hues. The nose is elegant and powerful, revealing a delightful ripeness and seductive aromas of dark berries (blackberry, cherry, blackcurrant), which are typical of its appellation. Subtle hints of sweet spices (turmeric, curry) are lifted by a touch of grey pepper, adding a lovely freshness. The bouquet is intense, with a slight sweetness (sugared almond), featuring notes of roasted almond and indulgent nuances of raspberry and cherry coulis. On the palate, the attack is exceptional: broad and velvety. This wine boasts a beautiful density, almost syrupy, promising to reveal its full character and complexity as it ages.

Food pairings

Sublime with truffled risotto or beef tenderloin with pepper sauce.
