Presentation
An essential reference in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Henri Gouges is a family estate where six generations have succeeded each other. Specializing in the expression of Pinot Noir, it exploits 14 hectares, spread over 10 parcels classified as AOC, including 7 Premiers Crus and a prestigious monopoly: Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges. The estate is also famous for Pinot Gouges, a white mutation of Pinot Noir discovered in Clos des Porrets in 1936. Following the principles of Organic Agriculture, the vines are cultivated with great respect for the soil and biodiversity. In the cellar, vinifications are low-intervention, with infusion extraction, gentle pressing, and aging in French oak barrels (10 to 30% new wood). The estate's wines combine power and refinement, offering cuvées designed for long aging.
Location
The parcels of Nuits-Saint-Georges from Domaine Henri Gouges are located around the village, both to the north toward Vosne-Romanée and to the south toward Prémeaux. The vineyards lie on gentle slopes between 230 and 260 metres in altitude, facing mostly east to southeast. This exposure ensures even ripening while protecting the vines from excessive wind. These mid-slope plots, close to Premier Cru vineyards, offer notable complexity and faithful expression of the Nuits-Saint-Georges style, producing wines of character that remain accessible and finely balanced.
Terroir
The soils are clay-limestone in composition, fairly deep, with varying amounts of limestone scree and marl depending on the parcel. These well-drained, living soils promote deep rooting and ensure a balanced water supply for the vines. The terroir provides a firm yet supple structure, ripe and expressive fruit, and a fresh, mineral backbone. Together, these elements yield a wine that is dense yet approachable, offering the signature energy and definition of Nuits-Saint-Georges without excessive rigidity.
In the vineyard
The vines are cultivated under the domaine’s strict sustainable farming philosophy. Soils are mechanically worked, without chemical herbicides, and grass cover is managed to support biodiversity. Phytosanitary treatments are applied only when necessary, depending on the vintage. Each intervention is made with care, aiming to support vine balance and favour the fullest terroir expression. Low yields are naturally maintained to ensure high-quality fruit. This respectful approach preserves vineyard health and contributes to the wine’s authenticity and precision.
Harvest
Harvesting is done by hand at full ripeness, with careful sorting of only the healthiest bunches. Grapes are gently transported and partially destemmed before being transferred into vats.
Winemaking
Fermentation takes place in open tanks with indigenous yeasts over 15 to 20 days, using moderate pump-overs and punch-downs. This process ensures a gradual, respectful extraction of tannins and aromas. Each parcel is vinified separately to maintain the identity of the individual terroirs, before blending at the end of the ageing process.
Ageing
The wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels, with around 20% new wood. The goal of this ageing is to bring structure and aromatic depth without overwhelming the fruit. Barrels are carefully selected to support the wine’s identity. Bottling is done without fining or systematic filtration to preserve natural texture and balance.

Tasting
Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Villages has a deep ruby colour with violet highlights. The nose opens with aromas of red and black fruits, cherry, ripe raspberry, forest floor, enhanced by subtle spice. On the palate, it is supple yet dense, with polished tannins and integrated freshness. The finish is clean and persistent, showing precision and energy. This is a generous, harmonious wine that can be enjoyed young after decanting or aged for 5 to 8 years for added complexity. It captures the soul of the appellation with elegance and depth.
Food pairings
This wine pairs beautifully with traditional dishes such as beef stew, duck breast with cherries or a roasted squash gratin with Comté. It also works wonderfully with aged pressed cheeses like Cantal entre-deux, which match the wine’s texture and structure. For dessert, consider a lightly spiced dark chocolate cake or a plum tart. Thanks to its balance and freshness, this wine can shine in both classic pairings and more daring sweet-savory combinations.
