Presentation
Located in Meursault, at the heart of the Côte de Beaune, Domaine Robert Ampeau & Fils is the legacy of several generations of winemakers devoted to tradition and the authenticity of Burgundy’s great terroirs. Founded in the early 20th century and structured by the emblematic Robert Ampeau, the estate is now led by his son Michel, who continues the family’s savoir-faire with the same unwavering commitment.
The domaine cultivates 9.3 hectares across a remarkable mosaic of appellations, both white and red. Its white wines hail from prestigious crus such as Meursault, Meursault Premier Cru, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, and Blagny Premier Cru. On the red side, the domaine produces elegant wines from Volnay Premier Cru, Pommard, Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune, and Auxey-Duresses, among others.
A pioneer in adopting environmentally conscious practices, the domaine was one of the first in Burgundy to introduce cover cropping between vine rows anticipating the importance of water management and biological soil balance. In the cellar, winemaking remains firmly traditional: hand-harvesting, full destemming, fermentation in concrete vats, and ageing in older oak barrels for about ten months, with minimal use of new wood.
What truly sets Domaine Ampeau apart is its unique philosophy of time: wines are only released after long ageing in the domaine’s cellars often several decades and only when deemed to have reached optimal maturity. This rare and demanding approach brings exceptional structure, complexity, and harmony to the wines.
The reds are supple, full-bodied, and beautifully balanced, with refined tannins, remarkable aromatic complexity, and lingering depth. The whites are pure and intense, combining energy, elegance, and a faithful expression of each terroir’s identity.
Terroir
The Clos du Roi climat is one of the most prestigious Premier Crus in Beaune, renowned for its soils composed of clay and limestone, sometimes gravelly, with excellent natural drainage. Favorably exposed on the slopes of Beaune, it benefits from generous sunlight and significant diurnal temperature variation, allowing for slow yet complete ripening of Pinot Noir while preserving the fruit’s freshness and character. This terroir is particularly well-suited to age-worthy red wines that express finesse, depth, and elegant tannic structure.
In the vineyard
Domaine Robert Ampeau practices careful viticulture, combining traditional methods with strict attention to detail. Yields are deliberately controlled to enhance fruit concentration. Manual work — such as pruning, shoot thinning, and occasional leaf removal — ensures optimal grape exposure, good airflow through the canopy, and healthy clusters.
Harvest
Harvesting is done by hand, with careful sorting in the vineyard or upon arrival at the winery. Only the ripest, healthiest berries are retained, in keeping with the expectations of this prestigious cru.
Winemaking
Vinification of the Clos du Roi Rouge at Ampeau is both traditional and precise. Grapes are often partially destemmed (depending on the vintage), and fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats (concrete or stainless steel) to preserve freshness and primary aromas. Maceration is typically complete, allowing for balanced extraction of color, tannin, and structure without excess. The use of natural or indigenous yeasts is common at estates like Ampeau, though this may vary by year.
Ageing
After vinification, the wine is aged in oak barrels, with a moderate proportion of new oak — enough to support but not overpower the fruit. Aging typically lasts 10 to 12 months, sometimes longer depending on the vintage and grape quality. During this period, rackings, light bâtonnage, and careful temperature monitoring are employed to refine structure, soften tannins, and build aromatic complexity. The wine is then held in bottle for additional cellar aging before release, ensuring full integration of wood and structure.

Tasting
The Beaune Premier Cru “Clos du Roi” from Domaine Robert Ampeau is a noble and structured expression of Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir. Its youthful ruby hue deepens to garnet over time. The nose opens with pure aromas of black cherry, raspberry, and blackberry, complemented by subtle oak and sweet spice. With aeration, nuances of blond tobacco, fine leather, and forest floor emerge, reflecting its aging potential. On the palate, the wine shows a direct and precise attack, supported by a silky yet firm tannic frame. The mouthfeel is generous, balanced by a fresh acidity that lends beautiful tension. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering notes of dark berries, spice, and occasionally a light earthy touch — a signature of the Clos du Roi terroir.

Food pairings
This classically styled and refined Beaune Premier Cru lends itself to a wide range of gastronomic pairings, particularly with dishes that are both elegant and full of character. It beautifully enhances game birds such as roasted pigeon, stuffed quail, or partridge, highlighting their savory richness. With red meats, it pairs gracefully with dishes like beef Wellington, duck breast with cranberries, or a thyme-roasted veal chop. Slow-cooked dishes — such as beef bourguignon or hare stew — find an ideal companion in this wine, especially after a few years of cellaring. Vegetarian pairings might include porcini risotto, sautéed wild mushrooms, or a gratin of roasted root vegetables. On the cheese board, it pairs wonderfully with aged Comté, well-ripened Époisses, or truffle-infused Brillat-Savarin.
