Presentation

Based in Ladoix-Serrigny, at the foot of the Corton hill, this family house dates back to 1895. Jean-Pierre Maldant chose in 1998 to leave the Hospices de Beaune to devote himself fully to his estate. Since 2010, his son Pierre-François Maldant has been in charge of vinification. The vineyard of 10 hectares extends over several prestigious villages of the Côte de Beaune: Ladoix-Serrigny, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Chorey-lès-Beaune, and Aloxe-Corton. Cultural practices are reasoned, with old-fashioned plowing and manual harvesting. The range covers a wide palette of appellations, from regional to Premier Crus and Grand Crus, including the renowned Corton-Charlemagne. Vinifications highlight balance and finesse, with precise aging that enhances the terroirs. Specificity of the estate: preserved family know-how, offering racy wines faithful to their terroir.

Location

Plot located on the "Le Corton" lieu-dit, offering one of the finest exposures in the Corton-Charlemagne appellation: east and southeast facing.

Terroir

Vines are planted at the highest part of the Corton hill, with a perfect geological cross-section. The marl soils vary in color from yellowish to ochre and brown, and are rich in clay. Layers of limestone alternate with marl beneath a thin layer of rendzina soils.

In the vineyard

Strict debudding, leaf thinning.

Harvest

Manual harvest.

Winemaking

Our white wines are made from Chardonnay grapes. After manual harvesting into small crates, the grapes are pressed whole without destemming or crushing, allowing the stems to serve as natural drains. After gentle pressing, the juice is settled for 24 hours to remove the coarsest lees. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in oak barrels.

Ageing

Aged for 11 months in oak barrels, 25% of which are new. The wine rests on fine lees with regular bâtonnage (lees stirring) until the end of winter.

Tasting

Pale gold in its youth with green highlights, Corton-Charlemagne develops amber and deeper yellow tones as it ages. The nose is of exquisite delicacy, with a bouquet that reveals buttery notes, baked apple, citrus, pineapple, linden, fern, juniper, cinnamon, and flint. Hints of honey are common. On the palate, it fills the glass and the mouth with a powerful breath, displaying remarkable acidity balanced by a rounded opulence. The Chardonnay from the Corton-Charlemagne appellation surprises with its concentration, distinction, and balance. Rarely does the grace of the grape variety so intimately reflect the character of its terroir.

Food pairings

This wine should be paired with noble and delicate dishes that are also powerful and aromatic. Natural matches include foie gras, where its bitterness is balanced by the minerality and strength of Corton-Charlemagne. More classically, noble shellfish with delicately strong flesh create spectacular harmony: lobster, langoustine, crab... Poultry and veal in white sauce also do justice to this appellation, as do blue cheeses.
