Presentation
An essential reference in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Henri Gouges is a family estate where six generations have succeeded each other. Specializing in the expression of Pinot Noir, it exploits 14 hectares, spread over 10 parcels classified as AOC, including 7 Premiers Crus and a prestigious monopoly: Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges. The estate is also famous for Pinot Gouges, a white mutation of Pinot Noir discovered in Clos des Porrets in 1936. Following the principles of Organic Agriculture, the vines are cultivated with great respect for the soil and biodiversity. In the cellar, vinifications are low-intervention, with infusion extraction, gentle pressing, and aging in French oak barrels (10 to 30% new wood). The estate's wines combine power and refinement, offering cuvées designed for long aging.
Location
Les Saints-Georges is the crown jewel of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation. Located at the southernmost end of the village, the vineyard sits mid-slope at an altitude of 240 to 260 metres, with full eastern exposure. It enjoys steady sunlight and excellent natural ventilation, allowing for slow, even ripening. Historically celebrated for producing outstanding wines, this parcel is often cited as a potential future Grand Cru. It gives birth to structured, deep and refined wines that perfectly embody the noble identity of Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Terroir
The soil in Les Saints-Georges is a mix of clay-limestone with a high content of brown marl and limestone gravel. This well-drained soil allows the vines to root deeply and draw essential minerals from the subsoil. It produces wines that are powerful yet elegant, complex and age-worthy. The site demands a lot from the plant, but in return delivers grapes of great concentration, ideal for crafting wines with depth and longevity. Les Saints-Georges is a benchmark terroir for generous and refined expressions of Pinot Noir.
In the vineyard
The vineyard is cultivated with sustainable practices. The soils are mechanically worked and no herbicides are used. Natural grass cover is managed to promote microbial life, and treatments are applied sparingly and thoughtfully, according to vintage conditions. Every action in the vineyard is aimed at maintaining plant health and encouraging slow, even ripening. Careful observation and adaptation guide the work each year. This precision viticulture helps preserve the integrity of the terroir and ensures grapes of exceptional quality.
Harvest
Harvesting is done by hand with meticulous sorting in the vineyard to select only healthy, fully ripe fruit. Grapes are transported in small crates to avoid crushing, then partially destemmed depending on stem maturity. The fruit is gently moved into open vats by gravity. Fermentation uses indigenous yeasts with gentle extraction through manual punch-downs and moderate pump-overs. Vinification is tailored to highlight the natural complexity and depth of Les Saints-Georges.
Winemaking
The wine is aged for about 18 months in oak barrels, with around 30% new oak. This long ageing period refines the structure and brings complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Ageing
Barrels are carefully selected to support, not mask, the character of the wine. Bottling is done without fining or systematic filtration, to preserve body and energy. The result is a wine of remarkable tension, depth and finesse, expressing the full potential of this prestigious Premier Cru.

Tasting
Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Saints-Georges reveals a deep garnet colour. The nose is intense and elegant, offering notes of black fruits, blackberry, cherry, violet and sweet spices, with a graphite hint. On the palate, it is dense and structured, yet balanced by vibrant freshness. The tannins are refined and polished, supporting a long, mineral finish. Complex and energetic, this wine has excellent ageing potential. It can be cellared for several years, but also opens beautifully after decanting in its youth.
Food pairings
This outstanding red pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as beef Wellington, roast duck with figs or black truffle risotto. It also matches well with a strong washed-rind cheese like Soumaintrain, which complements its power and depth. For a sweet pairing, consider a dark chocolate and cherry tart or spiced roasted pear. With its balance of structure and elegance, this wine enhances classic cuisine as well as more daring combinations, elevating both savoury and sweet pairings.
