Packshot - Edouard Delaunay Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saints-Georges

Edouard Delaunay, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Saints-Georges, Rouge, 2023

Presentation

One of the main characteristics of Nuits-Saint-Georges’ wines lies in the great diversity of its terroirs, diversity that is found in the different styles of wines that vary greatly depending on where the grapes are grown. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the House of Edouard Delaunay illustrates this multiplicity by offering several selections from Premier Cru climats located both north and south of the village.

Terroir

The wine of kings. Rare and reputed as the finest terroir in Nuits-Saint-Georges, “Les Saint-Georges” is one of Burgundy’s legendary climats and it is currently being considered for Grand Cru status. Located south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, at the bottom of the slope, the plot’s clayey brown soil strewn with pebbles lends depth and maturity to the wines along with ever-present minerality.

Winemaking

The grapes were handpicked at their peak of ripeness and brought quickly to the winery in small crates where they were meticulously sorted before being destemmed. Once they were transferred to tanks, they began to ferment naturally after a few days, under the influence of indigenous yeasts. Maceration lasted 3 weeks with very few punch-downs and a daily pump-over. After the grapes were pressed, the young wine was transferred to oak barrels (including 50% new oak sourced from Central France’s finest forests) and aged for 18.5 months.

Tasting

Beautiful deep red colour. The nose is expressive and complex, dominated by fruity notes of raspberry, plum, quince, cherry, and cherry clafoutis, complemented by delicate floral aromas of iris and violet. Subtle fresh oak mingles with sweet spice notes (curry, turmeric, vanilla) lifted by a hint of smokiness. On the palate, the wine is broad, ample and warm, supported by present tannins that will mellow over time. Beautifully complex and elegant aromas of mocha and liquorice then unfold. Already very expressive, rich and promising, this wine benefits from decanting in its youth to reveal its full potential.

Food pairings

Ideal with lamb chops marinated in thyme and garlic and grilled on the barbecue, or a melt-in-the-mouth lamb shoulder confit. It would be sublime with an escalope Milanese.
