Packshot - Edouard Delaunay Gevrey-Chambertin Le Village

Edouard Delaunay, Gevrey-Chambertin, Rouge, 2023

Presentation

The great village of the northern Côte de Nuits. World-renowned, the vineyard of Gevrey-Chambertin is one of the oldest in Burgundy. Vine cultivation dates back to the 1st century AD. By the 6th century, Gevrey was already recognized among the finest wines of Burgundy, notably thanks to the founding of the Abbey of Bèze in 640. Originally from Dijon and later established in the Côte de Nuits, the Delaunay family has always had a deep affinity for this iconic village and has long been recognized for the quality of its wines from this appellation. Gevrey-Chambertin wines are fleshy, generous, and intense—often described as "masculine" —with notes of dark fruit and licorice. We hope you’ll find those hallmark traits in this timeless classic.

Terroir

The grapes for this cuvée were sourced from 3 climats all located north of Gevrey, near the border with Brochon, aligned on the same tiered line. Starting at the top of the slope with poor, very stony soils (Les Evocelles), it moves through the piedmont with lighter but deeper soils (Chazières), and ends at the base of the slope, on the flat area, with much more clay-rich soils (Billlard), all at the same latitude. The gravel lends the wine elegance and finesse while the fossil-rich, clayey marls give it body and firmness. Sun exposure – mainly southeast and east – is ideal.

Winemaking

The grapes were hand-harvested at perfect ripeness, with 40% whole clusters retained during pressing. Each parcel was then vinified and aged separately. Following a short cold pre-fermentation maceration, fermentation lasted 14 days, with daily pump-overs at the start of vatting, followed by a few gentle punch-downs toward the end, depending on daily tastings. The wines were then racked into fine-grained French oak barrels from Central France (40% new oak) and aged for 17 months.

Tasting

Very beautiful vermilion red color, deep and radiant. The nose is intense and expressive, marked by fruity aromas of ripe cherry and plum. Refreshing scents of camphor, fresh mint, and pine forest follow, bringing energy and vibrancy. Elegant notes of blond tobacco, licorice, and Russian leather add depth and complexity. The palate opens generously, supported by bright acidity and slightly firm tannins that will soften beautifully with time. A hint of dark chocolate highlights the depth of the finish. A wine of great character, powerful and structured, with excellent aging potential.

Food pairings

This wine is excellent with spicy, flavorful Mediterranean cuisine. A perfect accompaniment to tajine with plums, couscous or chicken pastilla.
