Packshot - Edouard Delaunay Santenay Les Champs Claudes

Edouard Delaunay, Les Villages, AOC Santenay, Blanc, 2023

Presentation

Santenay, southernmost gem of the Côte de Beaune is renowned not only for its superb wines but also for its healing thermal waters. In this unique terroir, white wines make up a mere 5% of Santenay's production, making our Santenay Blanc a true rarity. The diverse soils of the region, ranging from limestone to marl and clay, impart a distinct character and complexity to the wine. This mosaic of terroirs contributes to the wine's refined minerality and vibrant freshness, capturing the essence of Santenay's rich landscape.

Terroir

This cuvée comes from a parcel on the northern border of Santenay, just below the Premier Cru Morgeot appellation in the village of Chassagne-Montrachet. The soils are deep and rich in hard limestone and red clay. The south-east exposure of the vines is ideal for good grape ripening.

Winemaking

The grapes are hand-harvested at perfect ripeness and carefully sorted at the winery to retain only the finest bunches. They then undergo gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in extra fine-grained French oak barrels from Central France (12.5% new oak). The fermentation phase is punctuated by light stirring of the lees (bâtonnage). Aging on fine lees lasts for 11 months.

Tasting

Shiny golden robe with green highlights. The nose, expressive and intense, opens with beautiful floral aromas (spring flowers) and fruity notes, blending grape, fresh mirabelle—sign of excellent ripeness—and stone fruits. A delicate touch of oak enhances the ensemble with nuances of crushed hazelnut and fresh coffee, while vegetal hints of cut grass and basil add a refreshing touch, lifted by a hint of citrus (bergamot). On the palate, the attack is broad and ripe, delivering depth and intensity. A lovely salinity emerges, accompanied by perfectly integrated tension. The finish reveals a subtle mineral note of white stone. A complex wine of great freshness, generous and intense.
