Packshot - Edouard Delaunay Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeots

Edouard Delaunay, Vougeot Premier Cru Les Petits Vougeots, Rouge, 2023

Presentation

Niched beneath the Musigny plots, between Clos-de-Vougeot and “Les Amoureuses” (no less!), the Vougeot Premier Cru vines represent by far the smallest surface area of Premier Cru vines in the entire Côte de Nuits (11.68 ha). They are therefore extremely rare and difficult to find.

Terroir

The grapes for this cuvée come from a plot located at the top of the “Les Petits Vougeots” climat, at altitudes of between 260 and 280 metres, adjacent to the highly famed Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru “Les Amoureuses”. The soil is both clayey and stony (due to a nearby old quarry), which lends delicateness and depth to the wine.

Winemaking

Hand-harvested, the grapes retain 25% whole clusters. Traditional vinification is carried out using indigenous yeasts and begins, from the fifth day of vatting, with daily pump-overs and punch-downs. Maceration lasts two weeks, followed by transfer into new barrels (fine-grained French oak from the Centre of France). After 6 months, the wine is racked and moved to second- and third-fill barrels to complete its ageing, which lasts a total of 16.5 months.

Tasting

Very beautiful red robe, vivid and brilliant. The initial nose reveals a mineral depth with notes of graphite and accents of mint and licorice. Gradually, fruity aromas of raspberry jelly emerge, accompanied by spicy hints of grey pepper and balsamic nuances (pine, heather). A warm touch of smoke and dark chocolate follows, along with more indulgent notes (chestnut cream, caramel, praline). On the palate, the attack is dense, supported by well-integrated, bright acidity. Fine yet structuring tannins are clearly present on the finish, calling for a bit of patience to fully unveil the potential of this characterful, grand wine.

Food pairings

Sublime as an accompaniment to spicy simmered dishes, such as couscous or sweet and sour pork stir-fry.
