Presentation
Classified as early as 1953, Château Latour-Martillac owes its name and history to the tower adorning its main courtyard, a remnant of a fort built in Martillac in the 12th century by the ancestors of the famous philosopher Montesquieu. This estate attracted the attention of Edouard Kressmann, a merchant in Bordeaux since 1871, especially for the quality of his white wines. His eldest son, Alfred, bought the estate in 1930 and developed the red vineyard, with his son Jean, on the remarkable gravelly ridge of the village of Martillac.
Today, the 6 children of Jean Kressmann own the domain and continue on the family tradition. Tristan and Loïc, the two younger sons, manage the estate with the assistance of the best wine consultants in Bordeaux. With each following vintage they produce the best from this authentic Graves soil. For the red varieties, the tradition of blending Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot is now topped up with the excellent Petit Verdot variety, which is planted in one of the best gravel plots of the plateau of Martillac.
Terroir
Composed of a mosaic of gravels, clays, and limestone outcrops. Each type of soil is suitable for a grape variety, red or white, which will express its personality. Under the supervision of Denis Wendling, the vineyard receives careful attention, from winter pruning to harvest, in order to facilitate the ripening of the best grapes and control the yield of the plots. The fruits thus reach a homogeneous ripeness. The bunches are carefully hand-picked and delicately transported whole to the winery.
