Presentation
Located at the gates of Pauillac and overlooking the Gironde estuary, the vineyard of Château Lynch-Bages, established in 1632, stretches over a magnificent ridge of gravel. The Lynch family, of Irish origin, gave it its name and reputation in the 18th century.
Terroir
Spreading over some 100 hectares in the municipality of Pauillac, the Lynch-Bages vineyard lies entirely on the preferred soil of great wines, formed along the estuary by the gravel alluvium of the Médoc. The property occupies the well-defined slopes located to the south and southwest of the town. The soils of Lynch-Bages are homogeneous, mainly made up of Garonne gravel from the Günz (beginning of the Quaternary) resulting from the slow erosion of the Pyrenees by the Garonne. Very draining and low in silt, these stony and sandy soils accumulate heat during the day to better release it at night. Poor and infertile, they allow moderate vine growth and promote deep rooting.
Ageing
14 months in French oak barrels (20% new wood).
