Presentation
Launched for the first time in 1998 with the 1995 vintage, Yattarna is the result of one of the most accomplished, targeted, and publicized wine development projects ever undertaken in Australia. The ambition and independent spirit that characterize successive generations of Penfolds winemakers inspired the creation of a white wine capable of defining the standard of the finest French chardonnay. In total, 144 trial wines were crafted before the launch of Yattarna. The "Bin 144" cuvée celebrates this pioneering winemaking character. By selecting only the best chardonnay grapes from regions with a cool climate, Yattarna reflects Penfolds' ongoing commitment to our initial goal of producing an exceptionally high-quality white wine. The very name "Yattarna" comes from an indigenous language, meaning "little by little, gradually." Each new vintage invites us to push the boundaries of winemaking innovation, grape selection, and our understanding of this noble grape variety.
The vintage
The 2024 season of Yattarna Chardonnay was characterized by cool weather conditions in the regions of Tumbarumba, Adelaide Hills, and Tasmania, with long and regular growing seasons. Spring was variable, moderating yields in the Adelaide Hills and Tumbarumba regions. Summer was generally mild, with a long hang time and limited heat stress, allowing for slow and steady grape ripening. The harvest schedule, well spread out across different regions, favored balance and consistency in the vintage. Favorable seasonal conditions helped preserve natural acidity and achieve a clear structure, with pure and clearly defined fruit at harvest. Overall, 2024 reflects a harmonious convergence between terroir expression and vintage, offering purity, tension, and precision across the three regions involved.

Tasting
The Yattarna 2024 reveals remarkable clarity and balance. A season conducive to restraint, allowing minerality, tension, and varietal expression to take center stage. A subtly assertive expression, with remarkable aging potential." Kym Schroeter, Chief Winemaker Penfolds.
