Presentation
Grange is the ultimate expression of Penfolds' philosophy of assembling multiple plots and terroirs. It is among the most famous wines in the world and is officially classified as a heritage icon of South Australia. Made from shiraz grapes that have reached perfect ripeness, with remarkable aromatic intensity and a beautiful structure, this wine embodies a unique Australian style, renowned for its remarkable consistency in quality among the great wines of the world. Since the experimental vintage of 1951, an uninterrupted succession of harvests attests to the perfect synergy between shiraz and the terroirs, as well as the climates of South Australia, of which Grange expresses all the singularity.
The vintage
The 2022 vintage benefited from temperate and balanced ripening conditions in South Australia, conducive to slow and harmonious ripening, offering Grange structure, elegance, and great aging potential. Winter rainfall close to, or above, seasonal averages helped restore soil water reserves before budbreak, ensuring a regular and balanced vegetative start for the vines. A rather contrasting spring, marked by temperate temperatures, persistent winds, and several significant hail episodes at the end of October, affected flowering and naturally reduced yields, particularly for Barossa Valley shiraz. Despite these climatic challenges, vineyards remarkably recovered thanks to a mild summer, characterized by few episodes of extreme heat and no prolonged periods beyond forty degrees. In the McLaren Vale region, moderate temperatures and rare heat spikes favored even ripening, while preserving freshness and balance. Coonawarra experienced a cool start to the season, followed by a dry and stable end to the season. Low yields, prolonged ripening, and healthy foliage resulted in small berries, a firm tannic structure, as well as restrained and balanced power.
