Château Pichon Baron 2025

Presentation

Château Pichon Baron, a Second Growth classified in 1855, is crafted from the oldest vines planted on the estate’s historic terroir. An authentic Pauillac, it offers an intense sensory experience, revealing black fruit aromas intertwined with spicy notes. Château Pichon Baron embodies elegance, power, and exceptional length on the palate. It improves year after year and has the capacity to age gracefully for more than 40 years in the cellar.

The vintage

The 2025 vintage is distinguished by remarkable earliness and particularly favorable ripening conditions. Following a relatively dry winter and a mild spring, the vines benefited from a warm summer punctuated by timely rainfall, helping to maintain water balance in the soils and ensuring steady grape development. The heat of the second half of August promoted excellent berry concentration and optimal polyphenolic ripeness, while early September rains refined the maturity of the Cabernet varieties. Harvesting, among the earliest of the last thirty years, yielded perfectly healthy and concentrated grapes. The resulting wine combines intensity, balance, and finesse, supported by precise tannins and outstanding ageing potential.

Location

The vineyard is located in the southern part of the commune of Pauillac, on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, approximately 40 kilometers north of Bordeaux.

Terroir

Deep Quaternary gravel soils composed of large pebbles and sand. These terroirs benefit from excellent natural drainage and a water-retention capacity that is highly favorable to vine growth. The oceanic climate is moderated by the proximity of the Gironde estuary.

In the vineyard

The vineyard is managed with a meticulous and traditional approach. Planting density reaches 9,000 vines per hectare. Yields are carefully controlled on a parcel-by-parcel basis according to vine age and grape variety. Rigorous selection of plots and old vines preserves the authentic expression of the terroir.

Harvest

The 2025 harvest took place over a particularly short and intense 16-day period, reflecting the consistency and quality of the vintage. Merlot was harvested from September 8 to 17, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon from September 18 to 24. This harvest, among the earliest of the past thirty years, benefited from favorable weather conditions, allowing each plot to be picked at optimal ripeness. The excellent sanitary condition of the grapes and their remarkable concentration enabled rigorous selection, resulting in wines that combine richness, freshness, and precision.

Winemaking

The estate employed every available technique to make the most of the vintage: gravity-fed vat loading, moderate sulphite additions combined with yeast-based bioprotection, the use of an indigenous yeast starter, carefully controlled low fermentation temperatures, and gentle extraction through light pump-overs and délestage operations.

Ageing

70% in new barrels, 30% in barrels of a wine for 18 months.

Varietals

Cabernet-sauvignon : 84%
Merlot : 16%
