Presentation
GULA in Latin means throat, gosier; ANA in Gaulish means marsh.
Altered peridotite bedrock (Earth’s mantle) in a serpentinite hill. The magmatic origins, the very composition of the rock, as well as the multiple upheavals it has undergone, give the lieu-dit La Butte de la Roche a vibrant energy. This unique terroir in the Pays Nantais is the foundation of our generation of winemakers. Its exceptional character tells the story of the uniqueness of the wines produced here. The Château de la Roche de l’Ouen overlooked the hill in the 15th century. One of the towers was renovated by the estate in summer 2023 as a historical heritage testimony of this promontory over the marshes of Goulaine. The partial replanting of vines on stakes along the rocky ridge is a continuation of our vision for this wild and preserved territory and the wines born here.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage is distinguished by its balance and a precise expression of the terroir. The vineyard, planted at 6,500 vines/ha, is managed using single Guyot pruning, respecting the sap flow. The vines are cultivated without synthetic products, using natural preparations that promote soil life. The grapes undergo rigorous sorting in the vineyard before pressing at the estate.
Location
The village appellation initiative dates back to the late 1990s in Muscadet.
A handful of estates, including Domaine Luneau-Papin, agreed on the concept of terroir, its richness and diversity in the Nantes region. The initiative was launched. Long known as Schistes de Goulaine, our Gula-Ana is now called Muscadet Sèvre & Maine Goulaine, referring to the Goulaine river, a tributary of the Loire and a common denominator of an area now mapped by the INAO. The Goulaine landscape is characterized by finely sculpted relief, with hills converging towards the marshes. Located on the upper slopes, the vineyard plots offer an unobstructed view of the Goulaine marshes, whose appearance changes with the seasons depending on whether they are flooded or dry. The gaze extends far over the remarkable surrounding features, offering a unique sense of landscape openness.
