Presentation

Culture and heritage. Created by the monks of the Cîteaux Abbey beginning in 1109, Clos de Vougeot and its famous château, one of Burgundy’s most emblematic monuments, are the testimony to the monks’ beginnings in the development of viticulture in Burgundy. The largest Grand Cru in the Côte de Nuits with some 50 ha of vines that are surrounded by walls belongs, in a manner of speaking, to all of the Burgundians who regularly attend the events held there that are organized by the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin.

Terroir

Clos de Vougeot is one of today’s most sought-after appellations where approximately 51 ha of vines are divided among 80 owners. The two plots the grapes for our cuvée are located: to the west at the top of the walled vineyard (“Les Petits Maupertuis”), and to the north at mid-slope (“Les Dix Journaux”). Here, the limestone-based shallow soils at the top of the Clos become deeper and more clayey, yielding wines that are very elegant, yet also boasting great richness and depth.

Winemaking

The grapes were handpicked and sorted a first time in the vineyard and a second time at the winery. They were carefully selected and vinified with a significant proportion of whole-bunches (60%). First days of vinification were punctuated by light pump-overs. On the fifth day, careful daily crushings by feet were performed to keep the stems intact. The wine is aged in barrels with a proportion of 40% new oak sourced from the forests of Central France, for 16.5 months.

Tasting

Magnificent deep and vibrant red color, with beautiful viscosity. The nose is ripe and complex, blending mineral and fruity aromas lifted by spicy notes. Scents of stewed fruits (vine peach, sugared blackcurrant) are paired with soft touches of vanilla and caramel. Alluring nuances of black truffle and Russian leather add depth and nobility. The attack on the palate is dense and powerful, revealing impressive richness supported by lively, well-integrated acidity and tannins that are still slightly firm but will soften with time. The finish lingers on gentle aromas of quince paste. A wine of true character, shaped by its terroir—both powerful and elegant—with outstanding aging potential.

Food pairings

Perfect with barbecued prime rib or duck confit. Delicious with character cheeses such as Epoisses, Langres and Soumaintrain.
