Packshot - Edouard Delaunay Gevrey-Chambertin Le Village

Edouard Delaunay, Gevrey-Chambertin, Rouge, 2024

Presentation

The great village of the northern Côte de Nuits. World-renowned, the vineyard of Gevrey-Chambertin is one of the oldest in Burgundy. Vine cultivation dates back to the 1st century AD. By the 6th century, Gevrey was already recognized among the finest wines of Burgundy, notably thanks to the founding of the Abbey of Bèze in 640. Originally from Dijon and later established in the Côte de Nuits, the Delaunay family has always had a deep affinity for this iconic village and has long been recognized for the quality of its wines from this appellation. Gevrey-Chambertin wines are fleshy, generous, and intense—often described as "masculine" —with notes of dark fruit and licorice. We hope you’ll find those hallmark traits in this timeless classic.

Terroir

The grapes for this cuvée come from two climats located to the north of Gevrey, on the border with Brochon, aligned along the same stepped slope. At the top of the hillside, the poor and very stony soils of “En Champs” give way lower down to the lighter but deeper piedmont soils of “Chazières.” The gravel brings elegance and finesse to the wine, while the clay-marl soils rich in fossils provide body and firmness. The south-east to east-facing exposure is ideal.

Winemaking

The grapes, fully destemmed, were placed in vats after careful sorting. Fermentation lasted nineteen days, punctuated by regular pump-overs and a few gentle punch-downs towards the end of vatting. After pressing, the wines were transferred to oak barrels, 24% of which are new.

Tasting

Magnificent deep ruby and carmine colour with bluish highlights. The nose is very refined and fresh, revealing soft nuances of marshmallow and raspberry, followed by floral and heady aromas of lily, iris and peony, complemented by a touch of toasted almond. The palate opens with a rich and глубокий attack, showing perfectly judged ripeness and remarkable balance. The structure extends with precision towards a saline finish reminiscent of small white stones. The harmony between elegant tannins and fresh acidity brings great poise, enhanced by subtle notes of pepper, black tobacco and liquorice. One of the standout wines of the vintage and a remarkable expression of Gevrey-Chambertin.

Food pairings

Ideal with beef tenderloin, roasted lamb or duck breast, highlighting its structure, depth and delicate spicy notes.
