Presentation

Internationally renowned, the Hospices de Beaune are part of the great institutions of Burgundy. Founded in 1443 to help the most needy, the historic hospital is located in the heart of the old town in one of the most beautiful ensembles of European medieval architecture. Over the centuries, the institution has received donations and legacies from local families in the form, mainly, of vineyards which currently constitute, with nearly 60 hectares, one of the most beautiful wine estates in the region. Vinified on site under the guidance of the charismatic oenologist Ludivine Griveau, these great prestigious wines are sold each year "en primeur" in the month of November following the harvest, during a spectacular auction. Every year, and at least since 1916, Maison Edouard Delaunay buys some of the finest vintages which it then matures and bottles with the utmost care for its best clients.

Terroir

This cuvée is the result of the vineyard bequest of Premier Cru Beaune-Grèves by Pierre Floquet in 1997. The Hospices have been cultivating 0.77 ha in two plots since 2004, the year the cuvée was created. The age of the vines is estimated at 35 years. The two plots are located side by side, just above the heart of the famous Premier Cru Les Grèves, known to be one of the best in the appellation. The Hospices de Beaune estate produced 14 barrels of this cuvée in 2017.

Winemaking

This wine was vinified by the charismatic winemaker of the Hospices de Beaune, Ludivine Griveau. Early manual harvest (mid-September) followed by a rigorous sorting of the grapes on a sorting table. Destemmed grapes and maceration for 17 to 19 days with punching down and pumping over. Aging for 18 months in new barrels then entrusted to the house Edouard Delaunay.

Varietal

Pinot Noir

Tasting

Fresh fruits (cherry and raspberry) delicate and elegant, with balsamic and smoky notes (beech smoke, peat). The palate entry presents a beautiful sweetness, full of roundness and freshness, with notes of blueberry and salted butter caramel. The long and fresh finish reveals notes of fresh herbs, verbena, and cherry pit. A truly great wine.

Food pairings

Superb with veal osso buco or as an accompaniment to strong cheeses such as Époisses or Reblochon.
